Etymology[edit]
What about Sanskirt rodhati?

- @Zezen: that's from Proto-Indo-European *h₁lewdʰ- (“to grow”), so this Proto-Slavic word is unrelated. —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 10:23, 1 April 2016 (UTC)
Thank you, Aɴɢʀ, I have found now रोधति - thanks to your tip.
Some claim that rodъ comes from Proto-Indo-European *h₃rdʰwo- (“high, upright”), cognate with वर्धति (√vṛdh, “to grow, elevate”). What do you think? Zezen (talk) 10:22, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
- I don't know. वर्धति (vardhati) and ὀρθός (orthós) seem to have an initial w-, which *h₃erdʰ-/*h₃rdʰwo- and *rodъ don't. The semantics of "high" to "kin, kind, gender" also seem a bit strained. —Aɴɢʀ (talk) 10:33, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
FYI, it was Mr Vasmer who claimed it. Zezen (talk) 16:42, 2 April 2016 (UTC)
