From Italian Salento, from Salentino dialect Salentu, of uncertain origin, possibly from Latin salum ((surrounded by) sea).

  1. A small peninsula at the south-eastern tip of Italy, sometimes described as the "heel"; principal cities are Lecce and Otranto.
