Various origins:
- English surname, probably derived from Middle English stang (“pole”) and possibly being a topographic surname fro someone who lived by a pole or stake
- Orcadian habitational surname, from a minor place called Stanagar, in the parish of Stromness.
- Borrowed from German Stanger, an occupational surname for a maker of shafts.
