Etymology[edit]

Stockholm +‎ syndrom, from English Stockholm syndrome, based on experience from a bank robbery at Norrmalmstorg square in Stockholm in August 1973. Swedish criminologist and psychiatrist Nils Bejerot first coined the term Norrmalmstorgssyndromet, which in English translation became the Stockholm syndrome.
