Etymology[edit]

târgu(l) (market) + Mureș, or "market(place) on the Mureș river". Known as Marosvásárhely in Hungarian, with the same meaning, named so in the early 17th century. Also known as Neumarkt am Mieresch in German (local Transylvanian Saxon Nai Mark or Nai Muark), and documented in Medieval Latin as Novum Forum Siculorum, from the name of the Székely people.
