Etymology[edit]
@Vahagn Petrosyan: It is an Iranian loanword from Parthian [Manichaean needed] (ʿyr /īr/, “thing, matter”), cognate with Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (ṣbw; hyl /xīr/, “thing, matter”) and Middle Persian [Manichaean needed] (xyr /xīr/, “thing”).--Calak (talk) 13:39, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Calak: I added that origin according to recent scholarship. --Vahag (talk) 15:55, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
- @Vahagn Petrosyan: Thanks. It seems that it is from *arya- "wealth" (see this for more).--Calak (talk) 16:08, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
- Possibly. Bailey 1979, page 34a has more. In any case, I have no doubt about the Iranian origin of the Armenian. --Vahag (talk) 16:33, 2 June 2018 (UTC)
