Etymology[edit]

Doesn't Mayrhofer discuss the uncertainty about the etymology of the Hittite word Aknis? It could be Indo-Iranian or completely unrelated. If there is an Indo-Iranian origin for the term, then it is more likely to be Indo-Aryan than Iranian as Mayrhofer proved that the Hurrian language of the nearby Mitanni kingdom had a specifically Indo-Aryan superstrate. A possible Indo-Aryan origin for Aknis is further corroborated by the Hittite scholar Jaan Puhvel. --Foreverknowledge (talk) 08:03, 18 September 2013 (UTC)Reply

@Foreverknowledge: I've added the possibly qualifier to reflect uncertainty of origin. This is what Mayrhofer says in EWAi I:45 (entry for agní):

Der heth. Gottesname daa-ak-ni-iš ist von verschiedenen Forschern in drei mögliche Relationen zu agni- gebracht worden: Übernahme des ar. Gottesnamens durch die Hethiter; idg. Urverwandtschaft; Zufalls-Anklang (s. Mh, Gs Kronasser 77f., mit weiterer Lit.).

अग्नि is not in Urdu[edit]

When was the last time you heard this word in Urdu? There is no word called 'अग्नि' in Urdu. Then why Urdu spelling? This is just a ploy to equate Urdu with Hindi with little to no basis in reality. Similarly there are ltos of words which are not in Urdu but their spelling has been given deliberately to advance this propaganda. Down with this propaganda. unsigned comment by User:150.129.238.193 11:14, 29 September 2016‎ (UTC)Reply

There are no ploys or propaganda here. Your input, corrections, and suggestions are welcome, but only if you can maintain a good level of sanity and reason. If you are into ploys, conspiracies, and propaganda, nobody is going to listen to you. —Stephen (Talk) 07:47, 30 September 2016 (UTC)Reply
