Reconstruction of first element[edit]

This could also be reconstructed as *aþi, in view of the cognate forms. Anglom (talk) 01:54, 3 July 2014 (UTC)Reply

Although, in view of *idi, I wonder if this might be reconstructed as *ad(i). Anglom (talk) 02:03, 3 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
I think it must be *aþi, *adi or *at. It appears that a regular sound change in late Indo-European shifted final -t to -d, which then shifted back to -t again in Germanic, and was then lost after unstressed syllables. An example of this is *alu, but also *þat attests this change, as does the past 3rd plural ending. So it seems that if this word is indeed reconstructable for Germanic it can't be with final -þ.
There is another way to account for the Gothic form though. It's quite feasible that Gothic 𐌰𐌸𐌸𐌰𐌽 (aþþan) simply represents *ak + *þan. —CodeCat 02:03, 3 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
I had actually come across that before, but the PIE form seemed to fit it perfectly. I don't mind deleting this entry if the sound changes don't fit. Anglom (talk) 02:53, 3 July 2014 (UTC)Reply
