I don't think it's a compound, it's the past participle of benvenir, which in turn is from Latin (whence French, Spanish, Portuguese (deprecated template usage) bienvenir). Mglovesfun (talk) 16:50, 21 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

I can't find any references to such a verb in Spanish or Catalan. The French definition seems to suggest that it was back-formed from the compound bien + venu; if it were really the past participle of bienvenir then the latter ought to mean 'to come well'. This would also seem likely in the face of the English welcome, German willkommen and Swedish välkommen, which are also old compounds of well + past participle of come. —CodeCat 17:20, 21 September 2010 (UTC)Reply
