Why are 3/4 classified as nouns?
- Because the "-ing" form of a verb becomes either an adjective or a noun. It only stays a verb if it's preceded by a word such as "be", "was", "is".
- So "bowling" in cricket is a noun but it's just a gerund of to bowl. It's pointless trying to define "bowl" in both bowl and bowling. You should move the verb senses to the pages of the plain old verb (called the infinitive or citation form). They may even be there already.
- Sometimes dictionaries can be more subtle than expected - I hope this helps to clear that up a little. — Hippietrail 00:25, 22 Apr 2005 (UTC)
