"alternate definition" section[edit]

  • 'alternate definition' is not a dictionary heading, but an encyclopedia heading
  • the contents of this section are not a dictionary definition of the word ekstasis, but are an encyclopedic discussion of types of ekstasis. This is like describing individual breeds of dog under an "alternate definition" of dog.
  • the very page cited gives a definition of ekstasis (viz "used in the original Greek sense of "standing out from"") not unlike the one already present.

So why is this here? —Muke Tever 19:00, 29 December 2005 (UTC)Reply

Alternate Definition (removed section)[edit]

Taken from Being and Nothingness [1]

Three successive ekstasis by which the being-for-itself is seperated from its Self

  1. temporality: The For-itself nihilates the In-itself in the three ways of past, present and future.
  2. reflection: The For-itself tries to adopt an external point of view on itself
  3. being-for-others: The For-itself discovers that it has a Self for-the-other, a Self which is, without ever being able to know or get a hold of.
