foenum

[edit]

foenum seems to be clearly used as an alternative spelling, as in foenum-graecum (etymon of (deprecated template usage) fenugreek, and used in current scientific name), but I don’t know what era or context it is used in; perhaps a classicist can clarify – thanks!

It's bound to be a late spelling, as in Classical Latin (age of Cicero) ae and oe were pronounced differently. It was only later on that they were pronounced the same, so that spellings got mixed up. But I wouldn't say that one specific spelling is the etymon of fenugreek; faenum/foenum graecum is the etymon of fenugreek regardless of how you spell it. —Angr 11:30, 24 February 2011 (UTC)Reply
