Tok Pisin - meri etymology[edit]

'meri' from english 'Mary' is noted as folk-etymology in "S. Romaine, Pidgin and Creole Languages [1988]", who quotes Mühlhäusler [1982], who claim the more probably origin for 'meri' is a Tolai word 'mari', meaning 'love' or 'pretty'.

Really? Although this surprises me, I'll add it in as an alternate, because I trust Mühlhäusler for the most part. By the way, we call Tolai "Kuanua" around here. --Μετάknowledgediscuss/deeds 04:34, 21 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
