Usage[edit]

This template may be used in Wiktionary entries to format quotations from the version of The Diary of Samuel Pepys (1893–1899; 10 volumes) edited by Henry Benjamin Wheatley. It can be used to create a link to online versions of the work at the Internet Archive:

Volume I (1 January 1660 – 31 March 1661) Volume VI (1 October 1666 – 30 June 1667)
Volume II (1 April 1661 – 31 December 1662) Volume VII (1 July 1667 – 30 April 1668)
Volume III (1 January 1663 – 31 December 1663) Volume VIII (1 May 1668 – 31 May 1669)
Volume IV (1 January 1664 – 30 June 1665) Volume IX (Index)
Volume V (1 July 1665 – 30 September 1666) Supplementary Volume (Pepysiana)
Note: all dates are according to the Julian calendar.

Parameters[edit]

The template takes the following parameters:

  • |1= or |volume=mandatory: the volume number quoted from in uppercase Roman numerals, from |volume=I to |volume=IX and, for the last volume even though it is unnumbered, |volume=X.
  • |2= or |date=, or |chapter=
    • In most cases, use |2= or |date= to indicate the date of the entry in the diary quoted from. When the diary was written, the dates were stated according to the Julian calendar and the calendar year ran from 25 March of one year to 24 March of the next. Therefore, the work uses the convention of indicating two years for dates between 1 January and 24 March. Do not follow this convention; instead of specifying such a date as |date=1 January 1659–1660, use |date=1 January 1660. The template automatically determines the date according to the Gregorian calendar, and formats the Julian calendar date for display as the chapter name. In addition, note the following:
      • If Pepys added a description for a particular date, this can be specified using |day=, for example, |day=Office day.
      • The template automatically indicates certain days, such as the Lord's Day (Sunday) and Lady Day (25 March).
    • When quoting from other parts of the work, use |chapter= to specify the chapter name.
  • |section= – a part of the work quoted from, for example, |section=footnote 3.
  • |3= or |page=, or |pages=mandatory in some cases: the page number(s) quoted from. When quoting a range of pages, note the following:
    • Separate the first and last pages of the range with an en dash, like this: |pages=10–11.
    • You must also use |pageref= to indicate the page to be linked to (usually the page on which the Wiktionary entry appears).
This parameter must be specified to have the template link to the online version of the work.
  • |4=, |text=, or |passage= – the passage to be quoted.
  • |footer= – a comment on the passage quoted.
  • |brackets= – use |brackets=on to surround a quotation with brackets. This indicates that the quotation either contains a mere mention of a term (for example, “some people find the word manoeuvre hard to spell”) rather than an actual use of it (for example, “we need to manoeuvre carefully to avoid causing upset”), or does not provide an actual instance of a term but provides information about related terms.
