Parameters

  • gender: 1st parameter or gender=: male or female
  • 2nd gender: or=: male or female
  • language of origin: 2nd parameter or from=: language name
  • language of the name: lang=: language code (though language name will do also)
  • main form, if the current is a diminutive: diminutive=
  • something to use instead of the initial "A": A=
  • what to sort by (in the generated categories) if not the pagename: sort=

Examples

To display the result

A male given name

and categorise the entry into the category Category:Male given names, use the following :

{{given name|male}}

If one knows the origin of the name; to display the result

A male given name

and categorise the entry into the category Category:English male given names from Hebrew, use the following :

{{given name|male|from=Hebrew}}

Substituting for 'Hebrew' the proper origin of the word : e.g., Germanic, Latin, Chinese.

To display the result

A female given name

and categorise the entry into the category Category:Female given names, use the following :

{{given name|female}}

Similarly, if one knows the origin of the name; to display the result

A female given name

and categorise the entry into the category Category:English female given names from Hebrew, use the following :

{{given name|female|from=Hebrew}}

If the name is male or female, use {{given name|male|or=female

For foreign languages' names: for a German name for which one does not know the origin, use

{{given name|male|lang=de}}

For a German name which one knows to be from Hebrew, use

{{given name|male|from=Hebrew|lang=de}}
