Etymology[edit]

Sino-Vietnamese word from 泰蘭, composed of (Thai) and (-land), coined with the phonetic morpheme (lán) by analogy with the European names of Thailand. In proper Mandarin, the country is known as 泰國泰国 (Tàiguó), with the semantic morpheme (guó, country; state; -land) instead.
