In the process of adding rhymes to English one- and two-syllable terms that already have pronunciations, I have stumbled across a few conventions in how English rhymes are constructed that, as far as I know, are not documented anywhere (except in talk page messages I have written). I want to keep track of the ones I am aware of here to aid my own memory, and also to more precisely consider whether constructing rhymes using full pronunciations could be effectively performed by a bot. If you know of more conventions or notice that a listed convention is just how the IPA works (rather than being specific to Wiktionary), please amend the list.

These conventions are all in addition to the more foundational principals at Rhymes:English.

Conventions[edit]

Observed conventions[edit]

Convention Examples
Do not place ties over affricates. huge, much
Parenthesize /ɹ/ when multiple pronunciations differ only in whether they include an /ɹ/. Stockport
Do not parenthesize any other IPA symbols. Instead list multiple rhymes to cover all possible inclusion / exclusion combinations. wallah
/ɚ/ should be treated as /ə(ɹ)/, and /ɝ/ treated as /ɜ(ɹ)/. pillars
Often one pronunciation of a word (usually RP) will end with the pattern /vː/, where v is some vowel, and another (usually GA) will end with the pattern /vɹ/. In such cases, the rhyme /vː(ɹ)/ is used to encompass both pronunciations, even though the vowel is long in only one of the pronunciations. shore

Assumed conventions[edit]

I assume these conventions because they seem only sensical to me.

Convention Examples
Do not add rhymes to English morphemes (which includes prefixes), except possibly suffixes; see debate below. hetero-, -'s
