Welcome[edit]

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 12:52, 17 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Comments on editing[edit]

Thank you for your contributions, I really have to say that they look very good. One thing that I would like to note is that we prefer to split etymologies, so barki gets three different etymologies. Another small thing is that {{l}} is preferred over plain links in sections like Synonyms, Derived terms, etc. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 12:52, 17 June 2020 (UTC)Reply

Etymology of cell[edit]

Hey, isn't this just a straightforward borrowing from American English cell (cell phone)? ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 13:06, 13 September 2020 (UTC)Reply

Sranan Tongo for "tobacco"[edit]

For some reason SIL's dictionary gives tabaka for "tobacco", but Etymologiebank gives tabaki (and also has different final vowels for Aukan and Saramaccan). Could you add a Sranan lemma with the correct spelling? ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 12:56, 3 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

@Lingo Bingo Dingo: Sure: tabaka.--Appolodorus1 (talk) 11:54, 5 July 2021 (UTC)Reply

tjappen[edit]

Hi, would you be able to comfirm that this term is indeed slang in the sense "to eat" and not in the sense "to dig" in Suriname? Thanks in advance. Thadh (talk) 21:33, 9 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Hi! Indeed, the sense "to dig" is not slang in Suriname. It just refers to the use of the specific tool, like "harken". We might add in the etymology that it can also be analysed as tjap + en. Appolodorus1 (talk) 08:56, 10 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Sounds good, thanks! Thadh (talk) 09:53, 10 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for adding! I don't think harken is the best synomym, sorry if my example in my previous reply was implying that. Maybe hakken or spitten would be better – this is the activity: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/50/FarmingZambia.jpg You could use a tjap as a rake but it doesn't have pointed teeth. Appolodorus1 (talk) 11:19, 10 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
Ah, I see. I think I'll just remove the synonym in that case, and I can't really think of anything to call this activity (@Lingo Bingo Dingo?); Adding that image may be a good idea though. Thadh (talk) 13:56, 10 January 2023 (UTC)Reply
All I know is that a hoe, at least in the relevant meaning, is called a hak in European Dutch. I do not know if hakken ever had the distinct sense of "to hoe, to use a hoe", but I feel the word at least generally fits that activity. Also, could someone add IPAs to tjap and tjappen (cf. tjaptjoi for the phonemes)? @Thadh ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 21:46, 10 January 2023 (UTC)Reply

Sranan mama[edit]

Zou je mama misschien aan kunnen maken? Wordt het trouwens niet vaak als één lettergreep uitgeproken met verlenging van de /m/?. ←₰-→ Lingo Bingo Dingo (talk) 18:08, 25 March 2024 (UTC)Reply

Prima! En dat klopt, net als in papa, kaka, gogo, wowoyo, babari, wiwiri, enz. Het Prisma-woordenboek spelt het als m'ma, Eddy van der Hilst als mma. Appolodorus1 (talk) 12:36, 26 March 2024 (UTC)Reply
