Welcome!

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contribution so far. Here are a few good links for newcomers:

  • How to edit a page is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.
  • Entry layout explained (ELE) is a detailed policy documenting how Wiktionary pages should be formatted. All entries should conform to this standard, the easiest way to do this is to copy exactly an existing page for a similar word.
  • Our Criteria for inclusion (CFI) define exactly which words Wiktionary is interested in including, there is also a list of things that Wiktionary is not for a higher level overview.
  • The FAQ aims to answer most of your remaining questions, and there are several help pages that you can browse for more information.
  • We have discussion rooms in which you can ask any question about Wiktionary or its entries, a glossary of our technical jargon, and some hints for dealing with the more common communication issues.

I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wiktionarian! If you have any questions, bring them to the Wiktionary:Information desk, or ask me on my talk page. If you do so, please sign your posts with four tildes: ~~~~ which automatically produces your username and the current date and time.

Again, welcome!

Not really a great idea to start ambitious new projects without talking to anyone about it beforehand. This may well get deleted. Maybe you should put it on your userpage until it is approved. Mglovesfun (talk) 16:27, 16 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry if I be too bold, but, let us see how it fares. I believe this project can get a substantial community interest.--Luhmann br 16:32, 16 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

We have two templates of use to this {{rfphoto}} and {{rfdrawing}}. These only address the need of finding entries that badly need an image.
IMO, the true distinguishing feature of visual dictionaries is that they have a picture of a whole thing or complex of things and have labels connected with features of the elements. What would be very valuable to compete with a surpass that would be the capability for users/contributors to add simple features like lines/arrows pointing to and shapes surrounding parts of an image that associated a wiki-linkable name with an image feature.
Another valuable thing would be a set of tools to speed the insertion of sister-project links to certain classes of entries and to find candidate links to images on Commons. Bots that could identify existing images that were a match to entries based on headword, other words in the definitions, and WP links would greatly speed the process of making a more visual dictionary.
Perhaps we could find a small suite of templates and links related to this effort and offer them as a set of edittools comparable to the "headings" and "templates" suites that are now available. DCDuring TALK 14:21, 17 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've moved your visual dictionary page to User:Luhmann br/Visual dictionary of the human body in English. Entries in the main namespace need to be definitions for words. Equinox 19:43, 5 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
