Etymology[edit]

From ã + bė̃ + cė̃, the names of the first three letters in the Lithuanian alphabet + diminutive suffix -ė̃lė. Possibly created by analogy of Polish abecadło. Analogous with many other alphabet names, cf. Russian азбука (azbuka), English alphabet, abjad.
