A calque of French h aspiré

[edit] Pronunciation

  • IPA: /ˈæspəreɪtəd eɪtʃ/

[edit] Noun

aspirated h

  1. (linguistics) In the French language usage of the letter h at the start of a word which does not allow liaison with a preceding consonant.
The French word héros ("hero") begins by an aspirated h. Consequently we can say le héros IPA: /lə e.ʁo/ and les héros IPA: /le e.ʁo/, but never IPA: /l‿e.ʁo/ and IPA: /le‿ze.ʁo/, like we do with the mute h.
