From Primitive Irish ᚐᚃᚔ (avi), from Proto-Celtic *awyos (perhaps compare Welsh wyr), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ewh₂yos. Cognate with Old Prussian awis, Latin avus, Gothic 𐌰𐍅𐍉 (awō) and Old Armenian հաւ (haw).
