From Proto-West Germanic *bakārī, from Proto-Germanic *bakārijaz, corresponding to *bæc +‎ -ere. Cognate with Old Saxon bakkāri, bekkeri, Old High German bekkāri, beckāri (>German Bäcker), Old Norse bakari (Swedish bagare).
