Etymology[edit]

From Old Swedish berætta, from Middle Low German berichten, in correspondance to Swedish rätta (verb) and rätt (verb and noun), equivalent to be- +‎ rätt +‎ -a or be- +‎ rätta. Cognate with Danish berette, Norwegian Bokmål berette, Dutch berichten (to report), berechten (to judge, to try), bericht (a report), Afrikaans berig (to report, a report), German berichten (to report), Bericht (a report) and Luxembourgish beriichten.
