Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Malayo-Polynesian *buhaŋin (sandbank, sand spit, shoal). Possibly composed of *bu (dust) (c.f. abo and abok) + hangin (wind). Compare Sambali boyangin, Kapampangan buangin, Remontado Agta tabuhangin, and Tausug buhangin. See also Malay pasir bungin.
