Spanish[edit]

Etymology[edit]

Semi-learned borrowing from Late Latin canonicus (canon), from Ancient Greek κανονικός (kanonikós). Cognate with Portuguese cónego, Galician cóengo.

The sense of “corn salad” seems to come by ellipsis from (hierba de los) canónigos.

  • Rhymes: -oniɡo
  • Syllabification: ca‧nó‧ni‧go

  1. canon (ecclesiastic who has a canonry)
  2. corn salad (any of the small plants in genus Valerianella, used in salads)
    Synonym: hierba de los canónigos
