From late Proto-Germanic *kirikōn (whence also Old Frisian tzirke, Old Saxon and Old Dutch kirika, Old High German chirihha), from Byzantine Greek κυριακόν (kuriakón) (δόμα) ‘Lord's (house)’, from Ancient Greek κύριος (kúrios, lord).
