Probably from Ancient Greek κλᾰ́σμᾰ (klásma, a fragment, rupture) +‎ -cyte.

      The mobilization of clasmatocyte which Gay and his collaborators found produced such a remarkable increase in the resistance of rabbits to intrapleural infections with streptococcus caused no appreciable increase in their resistance to this strain of pneumococcus.
