Etymology[edit]

Evidently by loose extension from control theory proper, regarding closed-loop control, or from programming, in which an inadvertently infinite loop (endless loop) needs to be closed in order to bring the programming task to successful completion.

close the loop (third-person singular simple present closes the loop, present participle closing the loop, simple past and past participle closed the loop)
