Noun[edit]

Usage notes[edit]

  • Among the alternative forms, copy editor is the most common, copyeditor about half as much, and copy-editor a fraction of that.[1] In terms of relative frequency, copyeditor keeps on gaining on copy editor.[2] Merriam-Webster lists both copy editor and copyeditor, the latter as less common.[3] The situation is different for the verbs, of which copyedit is the frequency leader.[4] Among proofreader variants, the solid form leads by a wide margin.[5]
