From Old Galician-Portuguese divida, devida, deveda, from Latin dēbita, plural of dēbitum, from dēbitus (“owed”), from dēbeō (“to owe”), from dē + habeō (“to have”), from Proto-Indo-European *gʰeh₁bʰ- (“to grab, to take”). Doublet of débito.
