Etymology 1[edit]

The GDLC derive it from Mozarabic 'iškaylûla, diminutive of escalla, from Late Latin scandula (type of wheat).[1] (Compare Spanish escanda (emmer wheat).) The DCVB derive it from Late Latin ēscāriola (endive plant), also the source of Catalan escarola.[2]
