  1. to kill by removing the brain; loosely, to decapitate
    • c. 1170, Wace, Le Roman de Rou:
      Fauces leva l'espee ke soz sez peaux porta,
      Tel l'en dona en chief ke tot l'escervela
      Fauces lifted the sword that he kept under his skins,
      And give him such a blow that he decapitated him
