From Proto-Germanic *fōlijaną (to feel, taste), from Proto-Indo-European *pal- (to swing, shake). Cognate with Old Frisian fēla (West Frisian fiele), Old Saxon gifōlian, Dutch voelen, Old High German fuolen (German fühlen); and with Latin palpō (touch softly, stroke, pat), Bulgarian палам (search), Old Russian пальць (Russian палец (finger, toe)).
