From Proto-Germanic *fōlijaną (“to feel, taste”), from Proto-Indo-European *pal- (“to swing, shake”). Cognate with Old Frisian fēla (West Frisian fiele), Old Saxon gifōlian, Dutch voelen, Old High German fuolen (German fühlen); and with Latin palpō (“touch softly, stroke, pat”), Bulgarian палам (“search”), Old Russian пальць (Russian палец (“finger, toe”)).
