From Ottoman Turkish فودلهجی (fodlacı), equivalent to fodla (“kind of wholemeal bread”) + -cı.

fodlacı (definite accusative fodlacıyı, plural fodlacıler)
- person who bakes or distributes this kind of wholemeal bread
- needy person who lives off this kind of wholemeal bread
