Etymology[edit]
Previously spelt frådse. From Middle Low German vrāsen, from Old Saxon fretan, from Proto-West Germanic *fraetan, cognate with German fressen (“to eat, devour”), English fret, Gothic 𐍆𐍂𐌰𐌹𐍄𐌰𐌽 (fraitan, “to devour”). A compound of *fra- (“away”) + *etaną (“to eat”).
