From Middle Dutch gehemelte, from Old Dutch *gihimiliti, from Proto-West Germanic *gahimiliti, *himiliti. Cognate Middle High German gehimelze, archaic German Gehimmelze, Middle Low German hemelte, Middle Dutch hemelte. Equivalent to hemel +‎ ge- -te.
