English
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From Ancient Greek γλυπτός (gluptós) + -odont.
Noun
[edit]glyptodont (plural glyptodonts)
- Any edentate of an extinct clade of South American armadillos which is identified either as family †Glyptodontidae or as subfamily †Glyptodontinae of family Chlamyphoridae.
Usage notes
[edit]- Not to be confused with glyptodon (any member of the genus Glyptodon) or glyptodontid (any member of Glyptodontidae, unambiguously regarded as a family).
- In 2016, a genomic analysis of the glyptodont genus Doedicurus placed it in a clade along with modern armadillos and alongside a sister clade comprising the subfamilies Chlamyphorinae and Tolypeutinae. Consequently, glyptodonts and all armadillos bar Dasypus were relocated to a new family, Chlamyphoridae, with glyptodonts being demoted to the subfamily Glyptodontinae. (See the cladogram at glyptodont on Wikipedia.Wikipedia )
- Some authors continue to regard the clade as a family.
