Etymology[edit]
From earlier hederik with common syncope of the intervocalic -d- (compare leer, weer, and so forth), from Middle Dutch hederick. An early loan from Latin hederāceus (“ivy-like”); compare German Hederich, attested as early as Old High German hederīh.
