From Proto-West Germanic *hīw, from Proto-Germanic *hīwą (“husband, wife, spouse”), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱeyw-, *ḱeym- (“relative, tribesman”), from *ḱey-.
Cognate with Old Saxon hīwa (“wife”), Old High German hīwun (“servant, spouse, members of the family”), Latin cīvis (“burgher, citizen”). More at city.
