From Proto-West Germanic *hīw, from Proto-Germanic *hīwą (husband, wife, spouse), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱeyw-, *ḱeym- (relative, tribesman), from *ḱey-.

Cognate with Old Saxon hīwa (wife), Old High German hīwun (servant, spouse, members of the family), Latin cīvis (burgher, citizen). More at city.
