Etymology[edit]

From Old Swedish hugormber, from Old Norse höggormr (a serpent). Equivalent to hugga +‎ orm. Cognates include Icelandic höggormur (a poisonous snake, a serpent). Compare Old Norse högg (a stroke, a weapon's blow) and ormr (a snake, a serpent; a worm; a dragon).
