  1. (botany) A proximal part of a sprout or a leaf.
    • 1943, Walter Reuther, The Citrus industry, volume 1, page 856:
      About 20 per cent produce hypophylls, or rudimentary leaves, and most of these soon die without producing any ordinary leaves.
