Albanian[edit]

Pronunciation[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

  • indefinite singular: krahë (m.; Tosk, Arvanitic, Gheg), kra ([kɾaː])
  • definite singular: krahi (Gheg, Old Albanian), kraha (f.; Bardhi)
  • indefinite plural: kraha (m.; Arvanitic)

Etymology[edit]

From Proto-Albanian *krau, intermediate *krosko (*-sko- > h), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱreh2u-,*ḱruh2- 'limb' (compare Latin crus (limb))[1], or from Proto-Indo-European *kroh₁(y)-, full-grade of the root *kreh₁(y)- (to sieve, separate), hence Proto-Slavic *krajь 'end, region'. Alternatively from Serbo-Croatian kraj 'end, region', with a semantic development to 'extremity, limb'. See also kërci and krap.
