From Proto-Celtic *lāɸigos (“calf”) (compare Welsh llo, Cornish leugh), diminutive from Proto-Indo-European *leh₂p- (“cattle”) (compare Latvian lùops (“cattle”), Albanian lopë (“cow”)).
