Central Franconian[edit]

Alternative forms[edit]

  • losse (southernmost Moselle Franconian; few dialects of Ripuarian, including Kölsch)

Etymology[edit]

From Middle High German lāzen, from Old High German lāzan.

The Ripuarian inflected forms lacking -ß- are possibly unshifted relict forms. Compare, however, the Middle High German contraction lān, from which the present forms could be derived. Compare also the Ripuarian past tense mot of mösse, which, for its part, cannot be explained as a relict.

Pronunciation[edit]

Verb[edit]

loße (third-person singular present löt or lett or ließt, past tense leet or leeß or looß, past participle jeloße or geloße or geloß)

  1. (most dialects) to let
  2. (most dialects) to make (someone do something)

Usage notes[edit]

  • The Ripuarian forms are löt, jeloße, but lett [let] in some western dialects. The forms ließt, geloß(e) are Moselle Franconian.
  • The past tense is usually leet in Ripuarian and looß [loːs] in northern Moselle Franconian. The form leeß is a rarer variant in both regions. Other Moselle Franconian dialects lack the past tense.
