Etymology[edit]
lähi- (“nearby”) + -iö. Originally coined by Finnish geographer Johannes Gabriel Granö as a geographical term "vicinity; surroundings" that did not catch on; later adapted to mean "suburb" by Finnish architect Otto-Iivari Meurman.
