According to Eesti etümoloogiasõnaraamat the word is of Finno-Mordvinic (~ Finno-Volgaic) or Finno-Permic origin. Cognates include Votic mõla (paddle, oar), Finnish mela (oar), Livvi mela (paddle, oar), Ludian mela (oar), Veps mela (oar), Northern Sami mealli (oar), Erzya [script?] (miľe, oar, paddle), Moksha [script?] (miľä, oar, paddle), [script?] (mǝľä), Komi-Zyrian [script?] (maľ, oar).
