Etymology[edit]

From madrasah +‎ aliah, from Arabic عَلِيَّة (ʕaliyya, high) +‎ مَدْرَسَة (madrasa).

Usage notes[edit]

In Indonesia, sekolah menengah atas is used by school which is under supervision of Ministry of Education. Islamic school supervised by Ministry of Religious Affairs use madrasah aliyah.
