From madrasah +‎ aliah, from Arabic عَلِيَّة (ʕaliyya, “high”) +‎ مَدْرَسَة (madrasa).

Usage notes

In Indonesia, sekolah menengah atas is used by school which is under supervision of Ministry of Education. Islamic school supervised by Ministry of Religious Affairs use madrasah aliyah.
