methylated spirit (plural methylated spirits)

  1. denatured ethyl alcohol used as a fuel and a solvent, and usually free of taxes on alcohol. Denaturing is achieved by the addition of methyl alcohol, frequently additional materials are added to give smell and colour to the substance.
