From minaccia (threat) or from a Vulgar Latin root *mināciāre, from Latin mināciae (threats) < minācia, from minax (threatening), from minārī, present active infinitive of minor (threaten). Compare Catalan amenaçar, French menacer, Occitan amenaçar, Portuguese ameaçar, Romanian ameninţa, Sicilian amminazzari, Spanish amenazar.
